ACAW 2009-New York City hottest contemporary art event. Catch an exciting new series of "Dream in a contemporary Secret Garden" exhibition by 12 artists at Chelsea Art Museum.

Dream in a Contemporary Secret Garden public programs Presented by The Forum at CAM

In conjunction with the exhibition Dream in a Contemporary Secret Garden, The Forum at CAM presents a curator-led tour, a panel discussion, and an artist demonstration.

The exhibition presents mixed media works by 12 artists from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and New York exploring the notion of a garden, an ever-popular theme in Eastern and Western art alike. Depictions of gardens send messages to the dreamer. Gardens change with seasons, according to the aspect of nature revealed, and due to human implication. Meanwhile, a dream encapsulates a person's spirit; it is a journey, a sequence of images, sounds, feelings, and experiences that transcends time and space. The notion of a dream in a secret garden conjures a romantic, or even erotic, scene, but the definition of a garden is not necessarily limited to a luscious, flora-filled oasis.

The big city is a garden landscape lying beyond nature; it too is full of secrets. To uncover its art is to discover its secret gardens. Calmness and concentration are vital in pursuit of these secrets. The artworks presented here communicate multiple perspectives to create a startling new landscape. In the city jungle, artists suppress ordinary views to articulate the secret gardens of the mind.

Exhibition tour Thursday 5/14 at 5 pm
Curator Luchia Meihua Lee will lead an interactive tour of the exhibition Dreams in a Contemporary Secret Garden. Artists in the show will also be available to talk about their work and answer questions.

Panel discussion & artist demonstration by Kotaro Fukui Saturday 5/16 at 4 pm
Visitors are invited to watch artists Kotaro Fukui as he uses his hand creates art with free lines and natural curves along the rice paper laid out on the floor. Admire the immense concentration and graceful movement of the artist while he makes drawing. A fourth generation artist, Kotaro Fukui's work is notably steeped in the tradition of Nihonga and the modern Japanese avant-garde. His vision and talent unfolds through a range of materials, lyrical expressions, and historical influences of traditional Japanese art. Following the demonstration, Fukui and the other artists in the exhibition will explain their work and take questions from the audience.

The Forum at CAM highlights the synthesis of the visual arts and other creative forms to foster critical thinking about today's world. Artist and curator talks, panel discussions, film screenings, performances, and other activities contextualize the exhibitions on view and provide an opportunity for deeper exploration of their themes. Presenting these programs to the public is an integral part of Chelsea Art Museum's mission to encourage cross-cultural dialogue and promote respect for the world at large through the arts.

All events are free with Museum admission ($8 / $4 students and seniors).

Queens International 4
January 24 – April 26, 2009

In 2000, the US census revealed the borough of Queens to be the most diverse county in the nation. Two years later, the Queens Museum of Art inaugurated Queens International , a biennial exhibition of artists from around the world who live and/or work in Queens.  Celebrating the most recent artistic achievements of Queens with 42 artists, collaborations and collectives from 18 countries working in a broad range of traditional and unorthodox media, the exhibition examines the boundaries of culture, tradition, heritage and nationality.

Like its predecessors, Queens International 4 addresses the relationship between “internationalism” and “multiculturalism” from a local standpoint. Culture is the logic by which we give order to the world. No one stands outside of it.  In Queens, one comes to recognize that nations are not walled fortresses but rather permeable containers for the fluid shifts of culture. Here, multiculturalism does not imply a static representation of international identities but rather an ever-changing shift amongst multiple cultures that blurs ethnic, racial, gendered and ideological boundaries. Circumventing conventional art discourse to engage with their immediate surroundings, the artists of Queens ignite a critical dialogue through lived experience, often in the form of collaborative, site-specific and public practices.
Queens International 4 is co-curated by José Ruiz and Erin Sickler.

Jim Whipple
10 years ago I found myself in a psychiatric crisis hospital, suicidally depressed. When the nurse walked me down the hallway and opened the door to the craft room I laughed and said no way, I am not doing this. But I sat in there until I got bored enough to pick up a brush and a kids watercolor set. I painted a very nice picture of a tree branch that I had in the pocket of my gown. I fell in love with painting that week in the hospital. Maybe that's the real reason I went there!

Title: 1,000 years

Chin Chih Yang's work addresses society's efforts to protect itself physically and psychologically against various catastrophes, both natural and man-made. These include environmental problems, such as pollution, as well as the effects of totalitarianism, surveillance, plus quarantine and isolation.

1,000 dollars is not a lot. 1,000 days is not too long. But 1,000 years is a long, long time. Can you imagine how much waste we accumulate every day? Do you know that it will take more than 1,000 years for our trash to become biodegradable in the landfills, which emit harmful greenhouse gases ?

123soho Fearture artists, Chin Chih Yang last exhibition at Tribes Gallery in NYC - Apri, 2008l

New York-based artist Chin Chih Yang's recent body of work is at once enticing and disturbing, alluring and disconcerting.

In his first solo show at Tribes Gallery, Yang's conceptual works will tantalize viewers with provocative videos providing delicious commentary on human foibles and a striking installation piece that stealthily brings to fore the damage incurred by indulging an insatiable appetite.

With loads of campiness and a touch of irony, Chin Chih Yang's art invites viewers to become better acquainted with the dark side of human nature and to think outside the box in an effort to find a collective solution to save ourselves and our planet.

Found, used, and donated objects will concurrently highlight the plenitude in our lives and metaphorically display twisted relationships marked by mutual dependence and conflict.

Columbia University in the city of New York

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute proudly announces the opening of a contemporary art exhibit, Outside In: New Realms for Taiwan Art , featuring ten artists from Taiwan.

Outside In takes a broad look at what it means to be a Taiwan artist in the art world today. Often driven to urban centers of the United States in order to find recognition for their work, Taiwan artists express their contemporary interests and concerns in a variety of traditional and cutting-edge media. The artists chosen for this particular exhibit deal with a wide range of subject matter including ethnicity, gender, mass consumption, and the environment. Their work, simultaneously innovative and mindful of a collective past, will serve to initiate discussions on Taiwan art in an international setting

Presented in conjunction with the Columbia Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Columbia student groups: Asian Pacific Affairs Council, Greater China Initiative , Taiwan Focus, and the Weatherhead Undergraduate Council .

About the artists

Long-Bin Chen

Long-Bin Chen is known for his skillful transformation of out-of-date books, phone books, newspapers, magazines, and computer paper into art that—when viewed from a distance—appears to be made of wood or marble. Chen's work is not only a commentary on human consumption and waste, it also mourns the pre-digital era of bound books. His art approaches the book object as an aesthetic object and attempts to combine ideas and concepts from the East with those from the West.

Long-Bin Chen was born in Taiwan . He received a BFA from Tung-Hai University in Taiwan and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York . He has exhibited widely in the United States , Germany , Taiwan , Japan , and Hong Kong . His most recent group exhibitions include The Invisible Thread: Buddhist Spirit in Contemporary Art at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island, New York; The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama organized by the Dalai Lama Foundation, a traveling exhibition; and Kidspace at MASS MoCA. He is represented by Frederieke Taylor Gallery in New York , where he had his most recent solo exhibition in 2006.

Wei Jane Chir

Wei Jane Chir has spent almost twenty years living and making art in Europe and America , as well as participating in exhibitions around the world, including in Russia , Germany , Taiwan , and the United States . Her practice encompasses various media and formats including painting, installation, film, and public art. Focusing on inspirations such as culture and social environments, her work is a search for harmony and peace in a world of conflict.

Wei Jane Chir was born in Taiwan. She studied painting and printmaking at San Francisco State University , and then went on to earn a BFA and an MFA from the University of Art in Berlin , Germany . With her unique techniques and strongly individualistic style, Wei Jane Chir's work has won numerous awards, including the Women's Studio Workshop Artist Fellowship, a Vermont Studio Center Fellowship, and a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellowship from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Having recently expanded into filmmaking, her first documentary film, The Legend of Lily Yeh , won the Bronze Plaque and The Chris Award at the 51st Columbus International Film & Video Festival, held in Columbus , Ohio .

Huang Shih Chieh

Huang Shih Chieh merges artificial materials and electronics to create organic living environments. His electronic components include motion sensors, remote control, Basic Stamp 2 computer chips, and rewired music tuners to establish interaction between the viewer and the space. The viewer's movement and their participation with remote controls can alter their surroundings with changes such as blowing wind, inflating plastic tubes and the flow of plastic glowing liquid.

Huang Shih Chieh was born in Taipei , Taiwan , and lives and works in New York . He was a participant in the 52nd International Art Exhibition Venice Biennial, and has exhibited worldwide including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei; the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai; the Des Moines Art Center; Tokyo National University of Fine Arts; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid and Burgos, Spain; and the New Museum and the Queens Museum of Art in New York. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, the Rockefeller Foundation New Media Arts Fellowship, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Sculpture Award, Vida 9: The Art and Artificial Life International Competition, ArtSpace, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. He holds a BFA from the University of California San Diego and an MFA from School of Visual Arts New York .

Su-Chen Hung

Su-Chen Hung uses a variety of media in both her installations and performances to express this experience of cultural duality between the United States and Taiwan . Although her work can vary from being intensely personal to a broader exploration of cultural and social ideas, the work always begins with a conceptual and visual core. Both her studio work and her large-scale public art projects have a meditative aura, creating spaces of contemplation and repose. Her installations encourage her audience to participate in the work rather than passively view it.

Su-Chen Hung was born in Kaoshiung , Taiwan and now lives in San Francisco , California . After studying Chinese Literature at Tunghai University in Taiwan , Su-Chen Hung went on to earn a second Bachelor degree in Sociology. She has also earned a BFA in Photography and an MFA in Filmmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute. Hung has exhibited her work in many parts of the world, including the United States , Europe, and Asia . She has received many fellowships and awards including the National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in New Genre, the National Interdisciplinary Fellowship/Residency from the McKnight Foundation in Minneapolis, the Valley Forward Association's Excellent Art in Public Places “Crescordia” Award in Phoenix, an Artist Fellowship in New Genre by the California Arts Council, and a fellowship/residency from the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California. In 2008, Hung has two solo museum shows scheduled in Taiwan .

Walis Labai (Diing-wuu Wu)

Walis Labai is a member of Taiwan 's Sadik indigenous tribe. While describing his video work, The Invisible Project–A Shadow Tribal People's Life Living , he states: “Within the video art work I am trying to remove the physical shape of indigenous people from the space in which they live, leaving only the shadows in the space. This absence shows an uncomfortable and uneven feeling of existence within the culture. If there are no people left who are able to determine their own cultural heritage and material culture, it will be a disaster to all of human life.”

Walis Labai was born in Nantou , Taiwan where he lives and works. He received his BFA in Physics from the Chinese Cultural University in Taiwan and an MFA in Computer Graphic Design from the Rochester Institute of Design. Walis currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Commercial Design at Chung Yan University and is Associate Professor at the National Don Hua University . His photography, music, film, and other mixed media have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in mainland China , Taiwan , and Korea .

Fang-Yu Lin

Fang-Yu Lin is a New York-based new media artist and designer whose artwork reflects the interplay of human experience, culture and technology. His work From the Great Beyond poses this question: “Is the Internet becoming an entity?” Inspired by Alan Turing's machine intelligence test proposed in his 1950 paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence (also known as the Turing Test), Lin's project attempts to channel this hypothetical entity via a robotic typewriter that allows the audience to engage in conversations—à la a Ouija Board—with the Internet. Through the dialogs, one may discovery the characteristics of this “being.”

Born in Taiwan , Fang-Yu Lin holds a BA from the National Chengchi University , an MS in Information from the University of Michigan , and an MFA in Design & Technology from the Parsons School of Design. His works have been featured in many venues and festivals, including Whitney Artport, Tate Online, Les Rencontres Internationales, Sonar Festival, FILE São Paulo , Seoul New Media Festival, and Bauhaus Dessau. The interactive installation From the Great Beyond also received an Honorary Mention in Prix Ars Electronica. In addition, his works have been published in Net Dot Art , Contemporary Chinese Art Yearbook, and Border Patrol: Artists Working at the Frontiers of Science and Technology .

Marc Lin

Marc Lin was first inspired by digital art when he saw Golan Levin's Audiovisual Environment Suite . He was impressed by the visual and sound effects as well as the interactive relationship between the audience and the art. Beyond a simplistic relationship limited to subject and object, Marc Lin has furthered his discussion on interaction by exploring the realm of social observation and criticism, in line with event-based Fluxus art and with artists such as Nam June Paik. Lin's practice involves the continued discovery of evolving "computer-based cultural elements," which perpetually shape and define the digital aesthetic of new media, and are continuously sculpted by a new lifestyle emerging from the era of digital networking.

Marc Lin was born in Taiwan and currently resides and works in New York . Lin Shih Pao

Lin Shih Pao's work reflects the most profound concepts of Asian philosophy, namely, a deep sympathy for human beings and an appreciation of the value of the union of humans and nature. His paintings often juxtapose traditional Asian brush ink landscapes with contemporary mixed media constructions, resulting in “post-surreal” landscapes. His installation work is concerned with the urgency of human communication and attempts to provoke his audience to lend a democratic character to his work.

Lin Shih Pao was born in Taiwan and currently lives and works in New York and Japan . He studied in Japan and then attended graduate school at New York University . He is widely known as the "Penny Artist" after his Penny for Peace (1997) project, in which he collected one million pennies to form a gigantic, three-ton sculpture, which is now permanently displayed at Hiroshima University. He has participated in group exhibitions at the 2005 Expo in Japan as well as the Museum of Modern Art in Saitama , Japan . His most recent solo show was held at the Fukuoka City Art Museum .

Hung-Chih Peng

Hung-Chih Peng's artistic practice—which includes sculpture, photography, drawing, and video—is an exploration of the art and cultural theory of the East and West. A common theme is the artist's use of dog images to which he attaches multiple meanings. Since recognizing their potential in 1997, the artist's work has focused almost solely on dogs as surrogates and symbols. His witty, irreverent work positions the viewer to experience life from a dog's eye view, bringing the absurdity of modern life, human strengths, and foibles into sharp relief.

Hung-Chih Peng was born in Taiwan and works and resides in New York and Taipei . He received his BFA at the National Taiwan Normal University and his MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. He is the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and artist residencies for his video and photographic work, including the 5th Taishin Art Award from the Taishin Bank Foundation of Arts and Culture; Exhibition Grants from the National Arts and Cultural Foundation, Taiwan; and the Swing Space Award from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. He was recently an artist-residence at the Omi International Artist Residency in New York . Peng's work has also been in exhibitions including the 10th International Istanbul Biennial, the OK Center for Contemporary Art in Austria , and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai .
