Narrative bio
I was born in Taiwan and moved to New York in 1980. I studied art and received my degrees from Parsons School of Design (B.F.A.) and Pratt (MS).

Since then, the line between my life and art has blurred. I have started two companies: one for cross-cultural marketing (66 Communications Inc.), and the other devoted to a website that displays the work of approximately 6000 different artists (123soho.com), and is one of my internet installation projects.

In addition to acting as chief curator of 123soho.com and participating in numerous exhibitions, I have served as invited lecturer at several universities and judged a number of art contests.

I have collaborated with other artists, and I have continued to be actively engaged in the changing world around me. I create work that deals with issues that effect individuals and then, by extension, communities and society at large. Creating art that deals with real-life issues is unpopular and even scoffed at by some, but it is important to me as an individual and an artist to counter work that is purely concerned with the artist at the center of his/her universe.

Project description
The author artist, Chin Chih Yang, is fascinated by how cataclysmic events impact life. Life is ephemeral and superficial reality an illusion. No matter what steps we take to protect ourselves against threats to our survival, there are ultimately no guarantees. We will never be in total control. However, this does not entitle us to sit in the bleachers of the game of life, waiting to get hit by a ball.

In his most recent body of work, he has concentrated on our efforts to protect ourselves both physically and psychologically against various catastrophes. How do we keep at bay the fear and anxiety that threatens to paralyze us when confronted by AIDS, SARS, natural disasters (such as the tsunami), terrorism, as well as religious and political intolerance and the conflicts they often generate? How do we perpetuate the myth that we are indeed masters of our fate?

The goal or objective of this particular project is to teach the participants humility (i.e. they will experience within a limited time frame what it might be like if their lives were suddenly altered by an unforeseen and unpredictable catastrophic event. During that event neither their actions nor reactions will enable them to control the final outcome of these events.). This experiment is not designed to duplicate what might occur in a “haunted house”.
