I have 5 prints by Al Mettel. The Arch of San Francisco, Notre Dame de Montreal, Mission Dolores, Havana Cathedral, and Borda Church. They are all mounted on an off-white matting and several have "onion-skin" paper describing the painting and a Christmas greeting card attached at the upper left corner, just kind of loose so it can be lifted off of the picture.

They are beautiful prints and I would love to learn more about them, like when they were produced, and why/when they were used for these Christmas gifts.

Replying to #52 Kurt Lindquiust: I have the same piece, appraised in 2000 @$250. Description: A. L. Mattel early, (European 20th century) lithograph of town view - 1935. I have not had appraisal updated. Piece came to us at death of my father-in-law. We believe it along with a similar piece were given to him at his wedding in 1935. There is a family picture that showed the 2 hanging on the wall in the background. So it seems to me that some of the people who bought his works at yard sales may have found very good deals!

Al Mattel - Talio-Chrome prints were given to my grandfather by Baker\'s Oil Company in Southern California. They had a Christmas Card greeting and explained all three prints that we now have framed and hanging on the wall. We have \"The Alamo\", \"The Pantheon\" and \"The Arch of San Francisco Cuzco, Pero\". The last listed has an onion skin description that states originally water Color reproduced in Talio-Crome. Mettel helped develope this process to retain all the quality of detail in his water colors.

Although we don\'t know the exact date these were given to our Grandfather, he worked in the oil industry from 1910 to 1960. We believe these were somewhere in the 30\'s.

Hope this helps. We do not have any idea of the value. To us they are priceless!

Al Mettel was known for his artistic depictions of churches. His artwork was printed by the hundreds or even thousands by Brown & Bigelow (his employer) each year for promotional calendars and Christmas Season or other holiday give-aways. Unfortunately, there is not much value in these prints - maybe $10 each. Some of the originals might have a slightly higher value.

I have a porfolio of prints (4) called The American Adventure by al Mettel. Between the prints in the folder is onion skin with stories on each. The back is quite definitive, including 5 pictures of Mr. Mettel etching, inscribing the plate, etching with acid, painting the plate and pulling a print. The story below the pics defines him as America\'s first color etcher. An art up to that time only in the olde world. The process was known as Talio-Crome. Much more info as to the process is also on the folder. My prints are Station Stop, Steamboat Days, Airborne-Kitty Hawk 1903 and Superstition Mountain-Stage from Phoenix to Florence. Hope this info is helpful. Would like to know the age or value of this portfolio.

Al Mettel worked for many years--probably more than 25 years -- with Brown & Bigelow, and printing and advertising firm in St. Paul, Minnesota. I recently acquired a copy of the company\'s 1956 calendar which contained 12 prints of Mr. Mettel. They were published/reproduced through a process called Talio-Crome, which was developed over 20 years by the company to improve reproduction of fine paintings in every medium--oil, water color, pastel or etching.

Charles Ward, President of Brown & Bigelow said Mattel had been a colleague and friend for 25 years.

Maybe this helps!

I have been holding on to a lithograph from Al Mettel. I did not realize that perhaps his first name was Al. I further looking at the back it is clear that it is indeed Al Mettel. Its hard to tell if the lithograph is a print or original. It looks like a picture of Holand. There is a windmill and an arch bridge. It also looks like an off white matting. It was given to a Fern Webster in 1930. Anyone have any ideas about this picture.

I am related to Al Mettel by marriage although he had died before I was born. My mother remembers him well. He was not only a great artist but a great man. My brother met an art student at the University of Michigan who was studying his work. If I remember correctly he came from France and originally did etchings. My mother has some originals. In later years he got into watercolors. He often gave sets of his prints to people for Christmas or Birthday gifts so if you have those in your family someone must have known him personally.

i also have 5 prints by Al Mettel. Cathedral of Morelia, The Pantheon, Old Doorway Tasco,

Puebla Cathedral and Mission San Carlos. They are all mounted on an off white matting as you described. I also have the "onio-skin" paper describing the painting. No Christmas card greeting though. My sister did say she thought these were given to my mother as Christmas cards, but they are much too large for cards. They were in my parents' home for as long as I can remember. Probably given to them in the 1940's or early 50's. Akron, Ohio
