Artist's Statement
M y work is drawn from and reveals my inner, experiential, psychic and cultural
space. Born and educated in India, I have traveled and lived in the UK and
Australia for the past 14 years. My work seeks to understand women’s lives by
opening and crossing boundaries to a universal, woman centered art. Of abuse,
domestic violence, miscarriage, loneliness, coupled with - the sensual, and the
Goddesses. An inner world of muffled struggles- within deceptively soft, cultural
bondages. Thus validating, unheard stories and silenced voices.

I transform domestic debris and junk into highly decorated painted sculptures.
My recent work uses wooden drawers, dolls, nails, beer bottle caps, textured
wool or sacred threads, sliced up tin can lids,, photographs of violated women,
aborted fetuses, used matchsticks, broken bangles, plastic eyes, torn out
scriptures from holy books, text, boxes, mirrors, sanitary napkins, grilles, cages,
obsessive patterning and free flowing automatic drawing. Of narrative outside
rational order with multiple experiences represented within one work. The dolls
are slowly empowering from submissive, reclining, withdrawn victims to confident
assertive individuals. Yet the penetration is invasive, harboring a darkness
framed by invisible rules and prohibitions.

I present my work through site specific Installations. Painted sculptures that
viewers can walk around and touch. Prayer wheels on the walls, to turn. A
Shrine with incense and candles, to light. Music and voice recordings across
cultures, of women at home/ with friends/ in bazaars/ humming/ crying and softly
talking. Artist’s books that look like Hindu prayer books but with contemporary
stories. Photographs of my dolls in narrative settings. I believe in more not less,
as a way of awakening all senses and perceptions.

I am drawn to Feminist and Outsider art. The handcrafted, the handmade, the
whole domestic as a venue for cultural change.

I hope to also help women’s organizations through the sale of my work and
produce art that is a worthy lifetimes contribution in itself.
