A Message from the Director:
The National Palace Museum Renovation Project is Beginning

The National Palace Museum holds a world-class collection cared for by first-class curators and staff.
Yet its facilities are, sadly, below par.

The main museum building was constructed in 1965 using the most up-to-date technology of th time.
However after nearly forty yearsk, it is clear that renovation is needed to bring the building up to
contemporaty museum standards.

In proceeding with renovation work, we know it will be difficult to avoid temporarily inconveniencing
our visitors. However, in consideration of the Museum's future, we feel that if we do not endeavor to
bring our facilities up to contemporary standards today, we will regret it tomorrow, The Museum and
the people of Taiwan have enjoyed over half-a-century together, and in recognition of the place of our
instiution in the public memory, we have decided on a renovation plan that will enhance the Museum's
gallery environment and visiting experience while preserving its unique architecture and visual
traditions.

Please accept our apologies for any temporary inconvenience during this period of renovation and
expansion. As we all await the coming of a new, state-of-the-art museum, let us express out
appreciation for your continuing patience and support.

Aesthetic Beauty of a Universal Nature Aesthetic Beauty of a Universal Nature
Tu Cheng-sheng / Issued January, 2002 / NT$360 (Paperback); NT$550 (Hardcover) / Chinese-English
This book is composed of two sections.  The first presents an overview of the Museum and its history, including its original founding in Peking, the movement of the collection during the Sino-Japanese war, the reestablishment of the Museum in Taiwan in 1965, and its subsequent expansion over the intervening decades.  It also touches on the Museum's institutional and administrative structure.  The second section offers a chronological survey of some of the finest works of the collection, with commentary by Museum scholars and experts.  These objects include bronzes, jades, Sung and Ching dynasty porcelain, calligraphy and painting of the Sung, Yuan and Ming dynasties, tapestry and embroidery, curio chests, rare Sung dynasty books, palace memorials of the Ching dynasty, and maps of Taiwan.

Japanese Lacquerware from the Ching Imperial Collection Japanese Lacquerware from the Ching Imperial Collection
Chen Hui-hsin / Issued May, 2002 / NT$390 / Chinese-English
The decoration of traditional Japanese lacquerware typically features fine lacquer painting and the delicate application of gold and silver dust.  Developed in the Nara period, Japanese lacquer products were first exported to the West by European traders in the sixteen century.  At the same time, Chinese merchants were also conducting a flourishing private trade with overseas markets and suppliers.  The Japanese lacquerware collected by the Ching court is a fine example of the cultural exchanged engendered by such trade contacts.

Special Exhibition of ching Military Documents Special Exhibition of ching Military Documents
Li Tien-ming / Issued July 2002 / NT$160 / Chinese-English
From the sudden rise of Nurhaci, founder of the Manchu state and grandfather of the first Ching emperor, to the collapse of the Ching dynasty in the early twentieth century, there was hardly a single day in which imperial military forces were not engaged in some part of the empire or its surrounding borderlands.  This guidebook offers a concise introduction to the Museum's collection of Ching military texts, archival documents, maps, and illustrations.  These records are categorized into three topics - Famous Campaigns, Military Organization and Weaponry, and Imperial Defense.

China and the World in the 18th Century - Academic Workshop
2002/12/13 - 2002/12/14
Lecture Hall, Main Administration Building
This workshop, which will be held on December 13 and 14, 2002, will focus on China's international relations during reign of Emperor Chien-lung.  These relations include both the court's interaction with the ethnic groups within, and on the periphery,of the Ching empire, as well as the cultural situation both within and beyond the confines of the palace.  The goal of such an investigation is to determine what, in anything was unique about eighteenth century Chinese art, and thereby assess the way in which traditional culture responded to, and was transformed by, external cultural influences.   Did the tumult of multi-ethnic interaction manifest a new turning point in artistic and cultural expression?  More generally, we hope that this conference, by bringing together scholars with diverse interests and perspective, will help refine our understanding of culture in the Chien-lung era.
