National Palace MuseumFigure Painting of the Middle Ming Dynasty: A Special Exhibition of Works by Tu Chin Gallerise 202, 212 2000/7/10 - 2000/9/25 Tu Chin (fl. ca. 1465 - 1505) hailed from the vicinity of Chen-chiang, Kiangsu, and made his home in Nanjing. Known as a professional painter with literary cultivation, Tu early on entertained scholar-official aspirations. However, after a poor showing in the imperial examinations during the early Ch'eng-hua reign (1465-88), he gave up pursuit of academic distinction and focused instead on literary and artistic endeavors. Enjoying Antiquities depicts the appreciation of antiques alongside the other classical scholarly pastimes: zither, chess, painting, and calligraphy. The simple elegance of the work largely follows the traditions of Southern Sung (1127 - 1279) academy painting, and offers an example of the sort of fine-lined figure painting by which Tu Chin strongly influenced the work of T'ang Yin's middle years. |
