Carving is one of the earliest artistic techniques to develop in Chinese history, with surviving examples of carved ivory dating to as early as the Neolithic.  However, the early history of carving is poorly recorded in textual records.  It is only in the Ming and Ching dynasties, a period which saw substantial economic growth and the development of elite literati interest in and support for the art of carving, that large numbers of carved artifacts surface onto the stage of art history.  The works of this period are noteworthy for their diversity, technical skill, and unsurpassed beauty.  The Museum’s exhibition of nearly eighty carvings features a special selections of fine works carved out of bamboo, wood, ivory, rhinoceros horn, and fruit pits.

The present collection of the National Palace Museum includes nearly 70,000 antiquities, 10,000 works of painting, calligraphy, and embroidery, and 570,000 documents, and manuscripts.   To introduce visitors to the diversity of this collection, the museum exhibits a broad selection of artifacts through an ongoing series of long-term exhibitions.  These exhibits include: Chinese Jades, Ritual Bronze Vessels of the Shang and Chou Dynasties, Ceramics from the Han to the five Dynasties, Porcelain from the Sung to Ching Dynasties, Buddhist Sculpture Through the Dynasties, Carvings from the Ming and Ching Dynasties, and Miniature Curio Cabinets.
