| Five Goals
for the New Century With the opening of the 21st century, I am pleased to present the new format of the National Palace Museum Newsletter with this brief statement on the current direction of the National Palace Museum. Due to its unique history, the National Palace Museum has been shaped into a distinctive entity with a special mission. In the new century, the museum will seek to abandon politicization and return to the intrinsic qualities of art and culture. In actually, true beauty is universal, surpassing the boundaries of nationality, ethnicity, and culture. The museum must endeavor to achieve humanistic ideals and thereby reach out to people throughout the world. This is our first goal. The National Palace Museum brought the distinctive beauty and aesthetic sensibilities of China's past dynasties to Taiwan. Over the past decades, it has largely stood apart from the simple, lively character of local Taiwanese life. In the new century, the museum will step down from its imperial throne and into the life of the local community, absorbing the rich vigor of Taiwan and introducing another dimension of culture to the people of this precious island. This is our second goal. In the coming century, we will not only continue our efforts to expand our exhibition space and facilities, but also strive to improve our collection, research, and education. If the museum is truly to become an international place in the new century, it must reach out and expand upon its foundation in all directions. This is our third goal. In terms of its role as a place of learning and scholarship, the museum will endeavor carry on its long-standing academic traditions, which trace back to the early 20th century and the unique relationship between the Central Museum (the National Palace Museum's forebear in Nanking) and the Academia Sinica. The museum will further develop this aspect of its heritage and blaze a new tail from these unique traditions. This is our fourth goal. This fifth and final goal is a wish that, in the new
century, the National Palace Museum will remain stable and free from uncertainty in this
current location. Its home is clearly understood, an it will remain here for
all time, united with the new Taiwan. Here it must help the advancement of
internationalization and the cultivation of the people. |
