National Palace Museum Donations From the Collection of Tann Po-yu and Tann Chi-fu The brothers Tann Po-yu and Tann Chi-fu were the sons of Tann Yen-k'ai, an important official who was Chairman of the Republican Government and Premier of the Executive Yuan during the early years of the Republic (1912 - present). Through both business and diplomatic channels, both brothers made substantial contributions to the economic and industrial growth of the R.O.C. In 1982, the Tann family collection, which included many works of calligraphy, rubbings, and seals was donated to the National Palace Museum. The Collection included rubbings of ancient stone engravings, literary works and seals belonging to Tann Yen-k'ai, and a large number of calligraphic works dating as far back as the T'ang Dynasty (618 - 906). In particular, the collection contains large numbers of calligraphic works by the famous Ch'ing dynasty calligraphers Liu Yung (1720 - 1873), and Wen T'ung-ho (1830 - 1904), who were all influenced by the early calligrapher Yen Chen-ch'ing (709 - 785). By making their collection public, the Tann family has provided both an invaluable resource for the study of history and calligraphy, and also an aesthetic gem for the appreciation of the general public. The National palace Museum is holding this exhibition of the donations by Messrs. Tann Po-yu and Tann Chi-fu as a small token of appreciation for their contributions to the Museum and society. |
