Morman Unsworth By His Wounds We
Are Healed |
||
| Jean Morman Unsworth has had a life-long involvement with the arts as artist, teacher and author. She was Professor of Fine Arts at Loyola University for 16 years, and Art Consultant for the Office of Catholic Education for 16 years. She has published art texts for elementary and high school, and has a eight-book series of elementary teacher manuals on drawing and writing titled Drawing Is Basic, and a book for the individual young artist titled, "I Am An Artist" now in production with Dale Seymour Publications. Ms. Unsworth's own work is predominantly in sculpture. She has carved five-foot tall processional crosses in mahogany for several churches. The feature of these is a crown of thorns carved as people attacking each another. It was from this that the image in her Jesus 2000 derived. The devastating gun culture that has spawned the Columbine massacre and so many other tragedies brought that same crown of thorns symbolism into guns. Using the medium of collage, she tried to bring together the pain and violence of people across the world, expressing the Scriptural promise, "By His wounds we are healed." (1 Peter 2: 24) Ms. Unsworth has many commissioned works of sculpture, wood block print, and fabric design in churches throughout the country. She has published two videos, "Art Shapes Faith Shapes Art" - Images of Jesus and Images of God, Mary and the Saints - and a book of images and thoughts titled Playing with God, both published by ACTA Publications in Chicago. Jean Morman Unsworth is the wife of Tim Unsworth, columnist of National Catholic Reporter. |
