Barry Francis Squire was born in the harbor town of Whangarei in the north island of New Zealand in the South Pacific.  Water played an important part in his early life, and he represented New Zealand internationally as a rower.  He did not approach a painting career until after he retired from sporting life in his early twenties.  He now resides in the rural aspect of temperate Northland with his wife, Megan, and their three children.

Painting fits around a busy family life in a jasmine-covered studio at the back of the house.  Here, over the last decade, Mr. Squire has produced works of a controversial nature, continuing g to push the boundaries of taste and format.  This can clearly be seen in the exhibited "Crucifixion" triptych painted in 1990.  With sculpture and music playing a large part in his creative life, Mr. Squire is a prolific artist with many other works containing deep elements of classicism and harmony.
