Mark Mckelvie has been seriously drawing for as long as he can remember.  Art was his first talent and the one for which he was noticed at home and school.  The first art form that engaged his interest was comic book illustration, and he used to copy everything.

Mr. McKelvie's biggest artistic influence while growing up was Frank Frazetta.  He copied many of Mr. Frazetta's paintings to learn anatomy and technique.  In high school, Mr. Mckelvie was introduced for the first time to the works of the great masters and was immediately taken by van Gogh's intensity and personal expressiveness.  It was this expressiveness that Mr. Mckelvie was hoping to achieve in his own art.  He bought a basic set of oil paints, a few canvases, an easel from a neighbor, and his passion was born.  He painted in his bedroom, enchanted by the new possibilities that oils opened to him, and nauseated by the fumes.   In college , he majored in art, graduating from Homboldt State University, California, in 1997 with a B.A.

Since college, Mr. Mckelvie has been developing his painting while living in Southern California.  He is currently 25.
